This Week in the Studio: Hands in Clay

Took a happy departure from the norm, a clay workshop held at the NCMA Winston-Salem. The theme was slab art. I focused on making a spoon/brush rest. There's a different kind of thinking that happens when there is something moldable in your hands. The clay has its own ideas. You guide it, but it tells you what it wants to be. Still rough, still unfinished — but there's something in that too. A reminder that everything starts as a lump of something, and the work is just listening long enough to find the shape.
